A Wealth of TreasuresAntiquity| Celts | Kunstkammer
On the 1st upper floor of the Old Castle you can marvel at genuine “treasures”! Here, the world-class collections of the Württemberg State Museum illustrate the cultural history of Europe. Our most precious exhibits from this period are displayed in the most modern forms of presentation in three of the castle’s arcade wings.
Our rich classical Antiquity collection offers a wide range of information about the world of ancient Greeks, Romans and Etruscans. Vases, delicate jewellery items, marble busts and colourful mummy portraits give a comprehensive insight into the world of the advanced civilizations of the Mediterranean region. Over the years, the collecting passion of the Dukes of Württemberg created a fascinating “treasure chamber”. This “Kunstkammer” is one of the largest European collections of its kind, full of amazing exotic treasures and imaginative handcrafted articles of astounding virtuosity. Rich early Celtic burial sites with masterpieces of bronze, iron, silver and gold bear witness to the impressive elite culture of the Iron Age. One of these is the unique Hochdorf “princely grave”.
